  1. Following the latest quick fix. Mainstream media would like us to belief that all we need is to follow the latest fad diet, health guru, wellness book, or TV personality. Fact is, that most of us have been there and done that. Creating the "New You in Just 7 days" is not working for most of us. Our deteriorating wellbeing and the ever increasing cost that goes with it is sad proof of that. We don't need more quick fixes. We need tools to help us affect lasting lifestyle changes.
     
  2. Thinking willpower alone is all we need. Willpower may work for a few, but for most of us, it just contributes to more stress and tension if we fail. And when we fail, we end up beating up on ourselves for being a failure. We need to learn how to go about making lasting lifestyle changes one step at a time. We need models and tools for affecting lasting lifestyle change. We need to learn to have compassion with ourselves. We need to realize that willpower alone is setting us up for failure.
     
  3. Not knowing what we are up against. And there are many. The Silent Killers are devastating opponents. So is time. If we are content to let time take its course. Or if we assume that as the years pass our body and good looks will inevitably deteriorate and that chronic illness is a natural part of old age. False notions – irrespective if they are personal or social – can also be major opponents. For instance the notion of self-responsibility. So is the notion that physical well-being demands too many sacrifices and is not rewarding enough – in other words it will take too much time and effort for too little fun. We need to take all these into consideration and plan to 'beat' them. We need to learn how to devise and implement a 'game plan' to unlock our wellbeing.
     
  4. Procrastination. Wasting time and opportunities for improving our wellbeing. “I am too old, too fat, too lazy, too tired, too busy, too sick”, we say. Fact is, life is never static – either we are getting better or we are getting worse. Procrastination leads to a vicious cycle of regret and loss of self-esteem. It is deadly and treacherous because it makes us feel that it's perfectly all right to forego and delay because there's enough time. It robs us of a better life, a better career, a better future, a better self. We need to commit and we need someone to cheer us on. Someone to keep us accountable.
     
  5. Lack of belief in our ability to unlock our God-given potential. Many believe that physical wellness is not possible for them. Just the opposite is probably true. Wellness is our birthright and it is well within our means and grasp. Or we may believe that we need a lot of experience to play. Fact is, we need no previous experience to start unlocking our potential. We all start where we are right now. It's those that use a planned approach and take baby steps that gradually build their knowledge, skills and well-being. We need someone to guide us along our quest.
